A few years ago, one of our faithful catechism teachers, Maria Castaneda, died quite suddenly of liver cancer. She left behind her husband and four young children. For years, this family has been involved in our youth center on the far east side of Juarez, Mexico, and the dad and kids continue to participate faithfully.
Last month we celebrated the 15th birthday of one of Maria’s daughters (also named Maria). There is a time-honored tradition in Latin America that when a young girl turns 15, her family and friends come together to celebrate her quinceañera – marking the passage from childhood to young adulthood. Centered around a Mass to give thanks to God, everyone is then invited to a party to continue the celebration.
Usually the parents of the girl present their daughter at the Mass and share a few words about her. The priest, not knowing that Maria’s mother had passed away, asked, “Where is the mother of this girl? Does she want to share anything?” There was a shocked silence as people stirred uncomfortably in their seats.
Then Lorena, one of the ladies who also volunteers here, stood and came to the front. Putting her arm around the girl, she said, “I know your mom can’t be physically present with you today, Maria. But I know she is so proud of the beautiful, sweet young lady you are and that she is smiling down on you from above.”
There was not a dry eye in the room as the two hugged each other. Even the priest had tears in his eyes. After the final blessing, all were invited to stay for the meal to continue celebrating young Maria’s very special day.
Yes, there was some sadness, but mostly there was joy and gratitude as we surrounded this beautiful family with love.
May the Lord bless you and your families with a very happy New Year!
