At each of our main locations in Juarez, Mexico, we have built soccer fields covered with artificial turf for our youth to play on. As I’m sure you know, soccer is very big in Mexico, and we have organized teams in our sports program. One of these teams calls itself the “Wild Geese,” based on the name the ancient Celtic Christians used for the Holy Spirit. The Wild Geese practice for three hours a day on Tuesday and Friday, serious about improving their skills.
When the World Cup began, it was the main topic of conversation among the youth as they followed the competing teams. It was fun seeing the kids so animated as they watched the different countries play against each other. They then tried to put into practice on our own soccer fields the moves they saw and the plays they learned from watching the pros.
Pope Leo has been speaking about the value of sports as “a powerful instrument for peace, human development, and spiritual growth.” He said that “athletics should act as a school of fraternity and an avenue for dialogue, rather than a space for violence or toxic rivalry.” That has been our aim with these programs.
Our coaches do a wonderful job teaching these very values to the youth. We have watched the kids grow in respect and understanding for one another as they strive together to exemplify sportsmanship and teamwork. It carries over into other areas of their lives as well. It is one way we are trying to bring light and hope to this troubled world.
