Serving others lifts man’s depression

We previously shared with you about our ministry to the elderly in the neighborhood surrounding the Lord’s Food Bank in Juarez, Mexico. What started as a small gathering of 12 people has grown into a group of approximately 60 seniors who meet each week for arts and crafts, a cooked meal, and an opportunity to chat and visit with one another.

Agueda and Nancy, the two ladies who lead this outreach, come from a family of 10 siblings. One of their brothers lost his wife last year and sank into a deep depression. He worked as a chef but was having trouble getting out of bed and didn’t think life was worth living. His sisters were very worried about him and wondered how they could help him.

Figuring it would be good for him to do something for others, they asked him to help prepare meals for the seniors. He agreed and started cooking at the center. It made a huge difference in his outlook, and now he looks forward to serving in the ministry and using his talent to help those in need.

He told us, “When I was growing up, we never had enough food for our big family of 10 kids. My mom used to send my brothers and me to serve at the Lord’s Food Bank, and we always came home with potatoes, beans, or some kind of food. That was about 40 years ago, and we did this for years. The Food Bank was always there for us and has been providing food to hungry people in this neighborhood for decades. My family and I are very grateful for that.

“And now I am so happy to be able to give back, serving in a ministry of the Lord’s Food Bank to help others.”

The vibrant and happy group of seniors who gather every Thursday. Many of them say this is the highlight of their week.
