Teaching Adults to Read

Last month, we shared the inspiring story of Flor Parra, who is helping youth continue their education, paving the way for them to graduate with high school diplomas and pursue higher education if they so desire.

Flor also has a heart for helping older people who want to learn. Some time ago, she visited our ministry to the elderly and noticed that some people couldn’t read or write. She thought that by using the Montessori method and materials, she could help them learn to read.

So she started with Maria. Maria is 65 years old and could never go to school due to her family’s lack of resources. She went to several different places as an adult for remedial classes, but she says she was never able to learn. She came to us because she heard there was a school for adults here, and she hadn’t given up on her dream to someday read.

Flor borrowed material from our Montessori school for children and began working with Maria using the Montessori method. Both were amazed at her rapid progress. “She is learning very, very fast with the material we have from the school.” Maria is starting to read for the first time in her life!

We are thrilled for Maria as a whole new world is opening up to her with this gift of being able to read. She inspires us with her determination and hard work. A special thank you to Flor for sharing her love and talent for educating those who lack the needed learning resources.
