The Gift of Pecans for Christmas

One of the happy recipients of the free pecans.

We received a call the other day from a nut processing plant to see if we wanted some donated pecans. “We’ve got about a ton of already-bagged pecans-in-the-shell if you can come and get them,” the owner told us. Yes, of course we wanted them! Pecans would be a very special treat to put in the weekly bags of groceries that we give to those in need at our food banks in Juarez, Mexico.

So we sent two men in a pick-up truck to the warehouse but when they got there, instead of one ton of pecans they found out it was actually two tons of pecans that were being given to us! They had to load the many bags of pecans themselves, and the guys were wishing they had brought more helpers. They took half to our youth center in east Juarez and the other half to the Lord’s Food Bank.

On the day of distribution when people came to pick up their food boxes, they exclaimed with delight over the gift of the pecans. “Oh, I’m going to make pies with these!”  One lady said, “Just in time to make capriotada,” a Mexican bread pudding that is popular around the holidays.

Speaking of the holidays, we want to wish you and your family a very merry Christmas. We are so grateful for your support and prayers as we bring hope and joy to families in often desperate situations. They join us in praying for you and your loved ones.
